Overview

Dates: September 1 to 9, 2026

This small-group adventure invites you to slow down, wander and truly feel Scotland’s wild west coast — where each island tells its own story.

From the dramatic glens of Arran to the sacred sands of Iona, we’ll explore five unforgettable islands — Arran, Kerrera, Mull, Ulva and Iona — each with its own rhythm, history and heart.

Along the way, we’ll walk scenic coastal paths and glen trails, visit ancient sites like Kilmartin Glen, and meet the locals who bring island life to life — from a master distiller to a coastal forager or perhaps a local cheesemaker.

Ferry crossings, storytelling and warm hospitality tie it all together with a final farewell cruise on Loch Lomond that’s pure Scottish soul.

Island Odyssey: Scotland’s Hidden Shores is for travelers who crave connection, authenticity and a touch of adventure.

And where every ferry ride leads to a new discovery, and every island feels like a world of its own.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tuesday, 1 September —Transfer Glasgow to Isle of Arran

Arran Scotland

We’ll meet in Glasgow this morning before making our way to the port of Ardrossan, where the adventure truly begins.

A short ferry ride carries us across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran.

This island is often called “Scotland in miniature” for its perfect blend of mountains, glens and coastline. (I’ve not been so I’m super excited about seeing this stunning island!)

Stepping off in the town of Brodick, we’ll pause for a coffee and soak in that first breath of island air before lacing up for our opening walk.

Our trail follows a lovely stretch of the Arran Coastal Path, winding south with sweeping views of the Holy Isle across the water.

We finish our walk right at our hotel in the seaside village of Lamlash — the perfect spot to unwind and ease into island life.

This evening, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner and toast to the journey ahead — five islands, countless stories and a week of wandering Scotland’s hidden shores.

Overnight: Isle of Arran – Auchrannie Resort

Meals Included: Lunch and Dinner

Walk Details: 8 km,  394 ft elevation gain, appx: 2 hrs 30 mins

Please note: Pre-night(s) available upon request

Day 2: Wednesday, 2 September —Glens, Waterfalls & A Wee Dram

Glens of Arran

This morning we trade the coastline for the heart of Arran, walking through its lush glens where rivers tumble through mossy gorges and waterfalls sparkle in the morning light.

It’s a landscape that feels timeless — peaceful, yet full of quiet drama.

After lunch, we’ll visit one of the island’s small whisky distilleries to uncover the secrets of uisge beatha — the ancient “water of life”, aka, whisky

Learn how this golden spirit is crafted, and of course, sample a dram or two to toast the day.

We’ll return to our hotel by late afternoon, with the evening free to follow your own whims — perhaps a cozy dinner at one of the local restaurants or pubs.

Overnight: Isle of Arran — Auchrannie Resort

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Walk Details: 5 km, 492 ft elevation gain, appx: 2 hrs

Day 3: Thursday, 3 September —Arran to Argyll: Footsteps Through Time

Kilmartin Glen

This morning we say farewell to Arran and take a short ferry across to the Mull of Kintyre — a landscape of rolling hills, rugged coastline and deep history.

Our first stop is the ancient hillfort of Dunadd — often called the birthplace of Scotland.

Standing atop its rocky summit, it’s easy to imagine the coronations that took place here, with kings placing their feet in the carved stone print still visible today.

From here, we journey north into Kilmartin Glen — a peaceful valley that holds over 350 ancient monuments, from standing stones to prehistoric burial cairns and swirling rock carvings.

Guided by a local expert, we’ll wander among these relics on a short but powerful walk through 5000 years of human history. (This is one of my favorite places!)

By late afternoon, we’ll settle into our tranquil hotel overlooking Loch Feochan — the perfect place to rest, reflect, and watch the evening light drift across the water.

Overnight: South of Oban — Loch Melfort Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Walk Details: 5 km through Kilmartin Glen

Day 4: Friday, 4 September —The Green Isle of Kerrera

Isle of Kerrera

Just a short hop across the water, the tiny Isle of Kerrera feels like another world — quiet, green, and delightfully off the beaten path.

With only around 100 residents, it’s one of Scotland’s true hidden gems.

We’ll cross the narrow Sound of Kerrera by small passenger ferry.

We then set out on a circular walk around the island’s southern half where we’ll pass the dramatic ruins of Gylen Castle — once a proud stronghold for the Clan MacDougall.

From here, the views stretch across to the Isle of Mull, giving us a tantalizing glimpse of where our journey will soon take us.

After ferrying back to the mainland, you can unwind in the comfort of our hotel — perhaps sinking into a deep leather sofa with a local Scottish gin in hand, replaying the day’s island scenes in your mind.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Walk Details: 10 km, 984 ft elevation gain, appx: 5 hrs

Day 5: Saturday, 5 September —Crossing to the Isle of Mull

Tobermory Isle of Mull

Today our island odyssey continues north to Oban, where we board the ferry bound for the Isle of Mull.

This scenic 50-minute crossing opens up sweeping views of sea, sky and distant hills.

Landing on Mull, we travel north to the charming port town of Tobermory, its colorful waterfront houses lined up like a box of seaside sweets.

We’ll take time this morning to wander its lively harbor, browse local shops, and soak in the island’s easygoing rhythm.

This afternoon offers a choice of experiences that showcase Mull’s creative, coastal spirit — perhaps visiting an award-winning cheese maker or joining a local guide for a foraging walk along the shore. (TBD)

By evening, we’ll make our way to our hotel in Craignure, where the sea views and salt-tinged air remind us that tomorrow brings more island adventures.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6: Sunday, 6 September —The Isle of Ulva

Isle of Ulva

Just a stone’s throw from Mull’s west coast lies the tiny Isle of Ulva — a place few travelers ever reach.

With fewer than twenty full-time residents, Ulva is rich in wildlife, layered history, and that unmistakable sense of peaceful isolation that only the Scottish isles can offer.

We’ll take a small ferry across the narrow sound and meander along trails that wind through meadows, woodland, and the island’s rugged south coast.

Along the way, we’ll pass a ruined homestead — once home to the grandparents of explorer David Livingstone. Perhaps it was here, gazing out at the sea, that a spark of adventure first took hold.

Returning to Mull in the evening, we’ll head into Tobermory for a free night to explore.

Try one of the harbor’s cozy restaurants or grab a pint in a local pub.

Chances are you’ll find yourself tapping along to some live folk music before the night is through.

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 7: Monday, 7 September —Sacred Isle of Iona

Isle of Iona

Today we reach the farthest point west of our journey — and perhaps the most special of all.

Traveling to the southern tip of Mull, we take a short ferry across the Sound of Iona to a place often called the cradle of Christianity in Scotland.

Iona may be tiny, but it holds centuries of spiritual and cultural history, along with a beauty that will take your breath away.

We’ll visit the historic Iona Abbey before spending the day exploring the island’s windswept coastline, white-sand bays, and ancient sites that whisper of saints and settlers from long ago.

Our walk to the island’s highest point, Dun I, rewards us with sweeping views across the western isles — a panorama that truly feels like the edge of the world.

Just below the summit, you might choose to splash your face with water from the Well of Eternal Youth.

No promises but it’s worth a try!

Returning to Mull in the evening, we’ll gather for a celebratory dinner — raising a glass to the islands we’ve walked, the stories we’ve shared, and the memories that will linger long after we’re back on the mainland.

Loch Lomond sunset

Today we catch a mid-morning ferry back to the mainland, stop for a brief stroll along the beach and then on to a very special location for an extended and relaxing lunch in a cosy seafood restaurant with breathtaking views.

After lunch we continue on towards Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, where we will either enjoy a relaxing boat trip on Loch Lomond or a gentle stroll along the banks of the famous Loch. (TBD)

Afterwards, enjoy a drink before returning to the hotel for our final dinner together.

Overnight: Luss Loch Lomond Arms

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 9: Wednesday, 9 September —Return to Glasgow

Glasgow

After breakfast, we say goodbye to the quiet beauty of Loch Lomond and begin our journey south.

As we drive toward Glasgow, the landscapes we’ve come to know — lochs, glens and island horizons — slowly give way to the city once more.

We arrive at Glasgow Airport by late morning, where our Island Odyssey officially comes to an end.

But the memories of Scotland’s hidden shores are sure to linger long after you’re home.
